The VPA Voice
"Giving a Voice to Industry Members"
September 3, 2013

Director's Corner

I hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable Labor Day weekend! As the summer winds down we want you to know the VPA has been working hard to produce many memorable events and positive changes for the Association. In fact, we opened a new office and hired a paralegal/assistant to help us move forward; we geared up on certification and recertification; we held a very successful Administrator's Council Meeting where we had an open forum to discuss current issues with all levels of entities at the table; we successfully wrapped the public relations InView Profile Series video project, which will be debuted at the annual meeting; and we secured a great program for the annual meeting in Las Vegas (see Annual Meeting Updates).

In other news, I will be attending the Democratic Attorneys General Association's Fall Policy Conference in Louisville, Kentucky on September 12 and 13. I will be meeting with different state attorneys general to discuss issues facing the industry.

I have also been invited to be a featured speaker at the 4th Annual Warranty and Service Contract Innovations Conference on September 17 and 18 in Nashville, Tennessee. My topic is "Promoting Customer Service Excellence and Ensuring Compliance." For more information, please visit the conference website.

We want to strongly reiterate that the VPA is here to help give you a voice. Since we opened the new office we have had a number of members stop by to see it and give us feedback on industry issues. We always welcome your feedback and look forward to hearing from you. Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance or offer your opinion. The Association's continued success comes from working together to solve the problems we all face!

All the Best,

Chris Carenza

Annual Meeting Updates
Sept. 15-16, 2013

Viva Las Vegas!

Reserve your spot today at this year's annual meeting at Bally's Las Vegas Hotel & Casino! The meeting will kick off with a welcome reception on Sunday, Sept. 15 from 6-8 p.m. On Monday, the day will begin with a Sponsor's Forum from 10-11:30 a.m. where you can reserve a table to hand out literature and network with attendees. The luncheon and agenda program will be held from 12-4 p.m. We have a great program planned with very informative speakers, including Stephanie Taylor from BPA Quality, who will give a demonstration on all of the updates related to the VPA's Call Monitoring Program. Also presenting will be Matthew Fehling from the National Board of Directors of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the president and CEO of the BBB in Phoenix, Arizona. Matthew has been with the BBB since 1995 and will be addressing accreditations, complaints, ratings and more. We will also have a panel of attorneys who will conduct a roundtable discussion on current events and issues in the industry. Please see below for our announcement of the Keynote Speaker.

This is an event you won't want to miss! Registration forms are available on the VPA website. As a reminder, the dress code for the annual meeting is business casual (no t-shirts will be allowed).

Keynote Speaker Announced

The VPA is excited to announce that former Major League Baseball player, businessman and philanthropist, Steve Garvey, will deliver the keynote speech at the annual meeting. Steve, a 10-time MLB All-Star, had a successful baseball career playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. In fact, Steve holds the National League record for consecutive games played with 1,207. Today, Steve is proud to be an active philanthropist and volunteer. He succeeded Frank Sinatra as the National Campaign Chairman of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and was chosen as one of Disney's 30th Anniversary "American Heroes."

"Steve is the perfect keynote speaker for the annual meeting because he embodies everything the Vehicle Protection Association stands for, including integrity, dedication and leadership. We are excited and honored to host Steve and hear stories from his days on the field as well as business motivation tips and takeaways." − Chris Carenza

Public Relations Update

Red Carpet Premiere!

In keeping with one of the goals set at last year's meeting, the VPA Board made an unprecedented commitment by allocating funds to a public relations campaign to promote our members. We are excited to announce that the InView Profile Series video project has wrapped and the final cut will be debuted at this year's annual meeting in Las Vegas. Beau Reinberg and John Carroll graciously hosted the video shoot at the Atlas call center in St. Louis, with many participants offering their time and talent. This video series provides us with the opportunity to move forward toward our new vision where we partner with our members to provide consumers with peace of mind when they purchase a vehicle service contract. We have already received very positive feedback on this project, and we hope you can join us for the "red carpet premiere" at this year's annual meeting.

VPA Opens New Office in St. Louis

The VPA is excited to announce the opening of a new office in St. Louis and a new addition to the team, Paralegal Kari Petersmith, who has joined the VPA as the assistant to the Executive Director.

Kari worked at a civil litigation law firm after graduating from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, where she attended on an athletic scholarship. "Kari hit the ground running and has already been a tremendous help to the VPA, especially with the opening of our new office. Her strong work ethic, positive attitude and legal experience will be invaluable to the VPA." − Chris Carenza

Feel free to give Kari a call and welcome her or stop by the new office and say "Hello." The office is located at 408 N. Euclid Ave., Suite 3SW, St. Louis, MO 63108.

Regulatory Updates

VPA Legislative Monitoring Report

As an Association dedicated to upholding the highest standards in the vehicle service contract (VSC) industry, we continue to monitor and track proposed and passed bills and regulations that pertain to our industry. We would like to share with you here August's Legislative Monitoring Report and Memo, which describes the potential impact of all bills and regulations, assesses who in the industry they primarily affect, outlines the movement of the bills and regulations, and contains links to the text of the bills and regulations.

Illinois House Bill 1460

The August Memo and Legislative Monitoring Report outlines a new state bill that was signed into law in Illinois. Illinois House Bill 1460 amends the Service Contract Act. It includes a definition of road hazard; includes contracts which provide for repairs related to road hazards in the definition of service contract; and provides that such contracts shall not include fuel additives, oil additives, or other chemical products applied to a fuel system or engine of a motor vehicle.

2013 TX 25064

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has proposed a new rule, Senate bill 1388, at 16 Texas Administrative Code (TAC) Chapter 77, Section 77.24, and amendments to existing rules Section 77.70 and Section 77.80, regarding the Service Contract Providers and Administrators program. This legislation was proposed last month, and it amends rules concerning the service contract providers and administrators program. A copy of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation Proposal can be found here.

VPA Run Donator

One of the VPA's goals this year is to improve our image by helping the less fortunate. Executive Director Chris Carenza has decided to run the 2013 ING New York City Marathon with Team for Kids because he was inspired many years ago by selfless individuals who rose above and beyond the call of duty. We are asking for your support to honor their inspirational service because many children today don't have the opportunities we had growing up. We chose Team for Kids because it is a dedicated team of volunteers who raise funds for critical services for underserved kids, reaching over 100,000 children in more than 400 schools and community centers. Among other things, the organization:

  • Reaches children of all fitness levels and athleticism, with a heightened focus on reaching out-of-shape and overweight children with little or no athletic experience.
  • Helps prevent overweight or obese children from eventually suffering heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and other chronic illnesses that lead to health care costs in excess of $100 billion annually.

Now you can participate in a marathon (yes, that's 26.2 miles) and not even leave your couch! You can join us and "Run with the VPA" by making a donation. If you contribute by September 30, we will announce your company in the next issue’s Member Showcase section, and you will receive a tax-deductible receipt for your records. Please visit this donation link for direct and easy access: http://www.runwithtfk.org/Profile/PublicPage/13164?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1.

Whether you are a runner, have worked with children, or have kids yourself, I hope you will join me to further this great cause!

Thank you so much, and see you at the finish line!
