Vehicle Protection Association Offers Tips for Fourth of July Travel

VPA keeps consumers in mind as people take to the road for the Independence Day holiday.

ST. LOUIS – July 3, 2012 – As Americans prepare to hit the road for the Fourth of July holiday, the Vehicle Protection Association (VPA), a not-for-profit trade association promoting vehicle safety, has released six tips for safe travel.

Although drivers should always ensure their automobiles are in a safe condition, many people are unaware of the issues that may arise on the road and the best steps to prevent them. The VPA recommends following these six safety tips before hitting the road for the holiday:

  • Inspect tires. Check your tires’ pressure, tread and any signs of abnormal wear and tear. Also make sure you have a jack and spare in tow.
  • Clean car battery. Summertime heat speeds up corrosion, which can dramatically shorten (or end) battery life. Before departing, open the hood and make sure your battery is clean.
  • Replace wiper blades and window wash fluid. Warm temperatures can produce inclement weather that makes driving difficult and leaves your car dirty. Don’t get caught in a storm with winter-worn wipers and no fluid to clean the windshield.
  • Check oil and oil filter. In order for your engine to run smoothly, there needs to be a sufficient amount of oil. If the oil is dark and grimy, it needs to be replaced.
  • Check brakes. Not only are brake issues extremely dangerous, but the longer you wait to fix the problem, the higher the repair costs. Any abnormalities should be checked out ahead of time.
  • Keep vehicle service contract handy. In the event that you experience an automotive malfunction, you’ll need to know what repairs and services are covered. Some vehicle service contracts include free roadside assistance. Check to see if yours does before leaving the house.

While these best practices may help prevent automotive issues, drivers still need to be prepared for anything.

“Having a sound automotive service contract is the first step to ensuring peace of mind on the road,” said Chris Carenza, executive director of the VPA. “The last thing people need to worry about this Fourth of July is whether or not their vehicle is properly protected.”
