Vehicle Protection Association (VPA) Applauds the Federal Trade Commission's Action to Uphold Ban on Illegal Robocalling

The FTC charged CallFire, which provides "voice broadcasting" services, with illegal robocalling.

ST. LOUIS – May 17, 2013 – The Vehicle Protection Association, a not-for-profit trade association promoting regulatory transparency, education and accountability for marketing and servicing automotive service contracts, today announced its support of the charges brought against Skyy Consulting, Inc., which does business as CallFire, by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for violating the Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR).

The FTC alleges that Santa Monica-based CallFire, which provides voice-over-Internet "voice broadcasting" services, knowingly transmitted illegal outbound pre-recorded telemarketing calls to consumers on behalf of its clients. This kind of robocalling has been illegal in California since Sept. 1, 2009. As part of a recent settlement, CallFire has agreed to stop placing illegal robocalls and pay a $75,000 civil penalty.

"The Federal Trade Commission's charge in this case is a wake-up call to all companies participating in illegal telemarketing that action will be taken against them," said Chris Carenza, executive director of the VPA.

VPA members are required to be in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations and uphold the VPA Standards of Conduct, which is an ethical code of conduct established to protect the rights of consumers who purchase vehicle service contracts.

"I commend the VPA for taking a stance against robodialing and supporting the FTC's tough enforcement," said Betty Montgomery, former Ohio attorney general and legal counsel to the VPA.
